Stone Temple Community Garden
We invite everyone – with gardening experience or without – to come and work with us at Stone Temple Community Garden in North Lawndale.
Beginning in February 2019, Sinai joined with the Stone Temple Baptist Church in North Lawndale to create a community garden and education center. We worked with Associate Pastor Reshorna Fitzpatrick, Church Elders, and neighbors to transform a neglected city lot near the Church into a growing area for organic vegetables and flowers, as well as a community gathering and educational space. All produce grown is offered at no cost to residents of North Lawndale.
This has been a joyful endeavor and a close partnership. We helped build colorful raised garden beds and started seeds. During the planting season, spring through fall, we have family friendly workdays one Saturday a month and opportunities for volunteers during the week to plant, weed, maintain, and harvest from the garden.
The Stone Temple Church is in an historic building that was once a synagogue for Romanian Jews in Chicago. We are enjoying sharing our cultural heritage with one another and building a peaceful and beautiful space together.
