Rabbi Michael P. Sternfield, Senior Rabbi

  • Joined Chicago Sinai in June 1995.
  • Initiated and led the development of the Sinai Edition of the Union Prayer Book, which has been adopted by a number of Reform congregations.
  • Formerly Senior Rabbi of Congregation Beth Israel in San Diego, CA
  • Rabbi of the Durban Progressive Jewish Congregation during South Africa's transition to multi-racial democracy.
  • Political science graduate of UCLA. Rabbinical training at Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati.
  • Producer of the Emmy-nominated first TV broadcast of High Holy Days services and Passover seders.
  • Current and previous affiliations: the National Rabbinical Cabinet of the United Jewish Appeal, Bonds for Israel, the Central Conference of American Rabbis, Planned Parenthood.
  • Married to Cantor Deborah Bard of Congregation K.A.M. Isaiah Israel in Hyde Park. Father of son Marc and daughter Robin.

Rabbi Evan Moffic, Assistant Rabbi

Rabbi Evan Moffic has served Chicago Sinai Congregation since 2005. He participates and leads in all aspects of synagogue life. Much of his energy is devoted to adult Jewish learning, where he has initiated several new programs. These include a film and text- study series, lunch and learns, Introduction to Judaism, and the ongoing creation of Contemporary Haftarot for use in B’nai Mitzvah ceremonies. 

 

Rabbi Moffic also devotes substantial attention to interfaith outreach, teaching in the outreach program, working with and counseling interfaith couples and initiating the Grandparents Circle for grandparents of children being raised in interfaith families.

 

Rabbi Moffic works especially closely with young families and couples, beginning the immensely popular summer Shabbat on the Beach series, a Jewish Parenting 101 class, and a seminar co-taught with Educator Heidi Kon on The Blessing of a Skinned Knee.

 

A native of Houston, Texas, Rabbi Moffic graduated with high honors from Stanford University. Three of his scholarly articles have appeared in the CCAR Journal. He has contributed to the Union for Reform Judaism’s (URJ) Torah commentary series and its Eilu v’Eilu intellectual debate series. His articles have also appeared in the New York Jewish Week and Chicago Jewish News. He has lectured and taught at Fourth Presbyterian Church, KAM Isaiah-Israel Congregation in Chicago, the Loyola University Museum of Art, the Jewish Center of the Hamptons, the Self-Help Home of Chicago, and the Union for Reform Judaism Great Lakes Regional Biennial. He is on the Regional Executive Committee of the Anti-Defamation League and the board of the Career Transitions Center of Chicago.

 

Rabbi Moffic is married to Rabbi Arielle Poster Moffic, who serves Congregation Sukkat Shalom in Wilmette, and they are proud parents of a baby girl, Hannah Rose

Rabbi Emeritus Howard Berman

  • Has served Chicago Sinai since 1982; Rabbi Emeritus since 1998.
  • Initiated the Sinai Outreach program for interfaith couples in 1982.
  • Graduate in European History of the University of London.
  • Studied for the Rabbinate at Leo Baeck College in London, Hebrew University in Jerusalem and Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati.
  • Previously served as Assistant Rabbi at Temple Emanu-El in New York City and as Associate Rabbi at Temple Beth Israel in Hartford, Connecticut.
  • Represented the Jewish Community on the Metropolitan Task Force of the World Parliament of Religions.
  • Editor of the World Book Encyclopedia section
    on Judaism from 1985 to 1992.
