Chicago Sinai Union Prayer Book, Vol. II, for the High Holy Days
In
the late 1970s, the Reform Movement’s Union Prayer Book for the
High Holy Days was replaced by the Gates of Repentance. For many
of same reasons we revised the Union Prayer Book for Shabbat and weekdays,
we have also published a Chicago Sinai Union Prayer Book of the High Holy
Days. Like its predecessor, the Sinai UPB conveys the classical liberal
ideas of American Reform Judaism. It also contains a number of innovations,
such as the inclusion of three Torah readings for Rosh Hashanah:
the traditional story of the binding of Isaac, the narrative of the
creation of the universe, and the revelation of the Ten Commandments at
Mount Sinai. The English translations of the Torah readings blends together
translations from the Jewish Publication society Bible and the exciting
poetic rendering of Professor Everett Fox’s The Five Books Moses, which is
based on the monumental German translation of the Bible by Martin Buber
and Franz Rosenzweig.
